So, what in the world are nootropics?

(any why they matter.)

According to Merriam-Webster, a nootropic, is a substance that enhances cognition, memory and facilitates learning. It is generally a non-prescribed chemical compound, sometimes found in supplements, herbs, vitamins, and even food. Basically, it classifies a wide array of compounds (some natural and some synthesized) that enhance cognitive performance in some way, shape or form. Some of the desired effects include mental clarity, increased energy, improved memory and learning capabilities, relaxation, better quality sleep, and more.

A small history lesson on smart drugs

So where did this term even come from? And how come not many people have heard of it until recently? The word “nootropics” is derived from the Greek words ‘noos’, meaning the mind, and ‘tropein’ meaning to bend, which is an accurate implication of what nootropics do. This term was originally coined in 1972 by a man of the name Corneliu E. Giurgea. He was a Romanian psychologist and chemist who synthesized Piracetam, a now well-known nootropic. It was initially said that Piracetam was a failure because it did not do its intended job which was to mimic a GABA-like compound that could cross the blood-brain barrier and induce feelings such as lowering stress and heightened relaxation. Although piracetam doesn’t do exactly what is was intended to, it is not a complete failure in the performance enhancing world because it’s still a highly-used nootropic today, affecting a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Don’t worry, we will be talking more about Piracetam later. The term nootropic was created in 1972, but this is not where the use of them started. Evidence dates back as early as 10,000 years ago when humans discovered certain plants affected their perception of reality. Part of this evidence shows that cavemen liked to carve images on the walls of their cave after taking their ‘smart drugs’. It’s truly amazing to think so far back in time and know we have always had the motivation to perform at a higher level and expand our conscious experience. [1]

If you’re an experienced user of nootropics and this content bores you to tears because you’ve read it so many times, be sure to read our other posts that talk about new scientific studies and new products that hit the market. Very exciting, scientific stuff going on in this space, along with not-so-scientific stuff that needs to be addressed. In any case, let’s talk about the theme of this site; nootropic stacks, hence the name.

What are nootropic stacks?

Very simply, nootropic stacks are when a user combines, or “stacks”, multiple nootropics to receive the desired effect. Stacking and combining nootropics is really when you receive many of the great benefits that you hear people talking about. We can see why this is by comparing it to exercise. If the only thing you needed to do in order to have the so called, “perfect body”, was run on the treadmill; you’d see a ton more people have the perfect body. But it’s not that simple…You need to have a healthy balanced diet, too. You need to train in different capacities to ensure your joints stay healthy, resilient, and strong. When you begin to combine and stack all these parts of living a healthy lifestyle, you begin to see and feel the results in a dramatic way. The same thing goes for nootropics. In order to maximize the benefits, it’s essential to first begin by reading and understanding what stacks could work well for you, and then test your hypothesis. The moral of the story is: getting the mental performance you are looking for requires stacking nootropics, and not relying fully on a single one. Period.
